MANGROVE FORESTS PROBLEMS

Lampung Province touted as Jakarta satellite growth. The development of the area at the eastern tip of Sumatra is relatively rapid. Total population continues to multiply, farms and industries also appear. However, progress is not without excesses. Exploitation of natural resources on a large scale and change people’s lifestyles, have a significant impact on the environment, especially in coastal areas.

Unless the protected forest area, arguably not even an inch of the beach area, which length is 1105 kilometers, not exploited. East coast, which was originally dominated by mangrove forests, has now become rice fields and shrimp ponds, especially around bays and estuaries. Currently the remaining mangrove forests only about 2000 acres, 10% of the extent of 15 years ago. The disappearance of these forests not only destroy the unique ecosystem of marsh, but also cause serious erosion problems.
